ALLEN
1.  SAMUEL ALLEN, b. ca. 1600, came from Bridgewater, Somersetshire, England, and resided at Braintree, Mass. in 1636.  His first wife was ANNE who died in Sept. 1641.  He m. (2) Margaret, widow of Edward Lamb.  Hi died August 5, 1669.
     For the children of Samuel Allen see Bank's History of Martha's Vineyard, Vol. III, p. 3.
    Among his children was:
2.  JAMES ALLEN, probably born at Braintree, Mass., ca. 1636.  Tradition says that he married about 1662 ELIZABETH PERKINS who was born about 1644, but this fact has not been definitely established.  He removed to Sandwich, Mass. about 1662 and to West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard in 1667.  He was an Assistant Justice in 1675, Justice to the Quarterly Sessions of the Peace, and died at Chilmark, MV. on July 25, 1714, aged 78.  His widow Elizabeth died at Chilmark on August 7, 1722, aged 78.

ALVORD
1.    THOMAS ALVORD and his wife JOAN HAWKINS were married at Bridport, Dorset, England, May 11, 1618, and had a son Alexander baptized there Oct. 15, 1627.  He was probably:

2.    ALEXANDER ALVORD who married at Windsor, Conn., Oct. 26, 1646, MARY VORE. He fought in the King Phillips War and died at Northampton, Mass. Oct. 3, 1687.

    Among them was:
3.    ABIGAIL ALVORD, b. Windsor, Conn., Oct. 6, 1647; m. July 3, 1666, THOMAS ROOT (q.v.); d. Northampton, Mass., June 17, 1699.


 
 
ARNOLD
1.    HENRY ARNOLD, m. ELIZABETH COLFAX.  He was a farmer.  His will was presented for probate at Hartford, Conn., July 6, 1725.  In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth and his son John (Manwaring's Early Conn. Probates 2:459).
    The children of Henry Arnold mentioned in his will were:
        i.    Henry, d. unmarried, 1725.
2.    ii.    JOHN, m. Jan. 12, 1709/10, Hannah Meakins; d. 1741-2.
      iii.    Benjamin.

      vi.    Elizabeth, m. Jan. 27, 1714, Ebenezer Fox (Hist. of Wethersfield 2:246).
2.        JOHN ARNOLD, m. at Hartford, Conn., Jan. 12, 1709/10, HANNAH MEAKINS.  His will was dated Nov. 14, 1741, and probated at Hartford about 1742, although no date of probate is recorded (Manwaring's Early Conn. Probates 3:381).  In his will he mentions his daughter Hannah, wife of Ebenezer Hills, Jr.
    The children of John Arnold, according to his will and Hinman's Connecticut Settlers, were:

AVERY
1.    CHRISTOPHER AVERY was as Kersey weaver of Torbrian, in the deaconry of Totnes, Devonshire, England.  His will was dated July 26, 1613 and proved in August 1613.  His widow JOHANN administered his estate.  Probably his son was:
2.    CHRISTOPHER AVERY of Iplepen, Devonshire, England, m. Aug. 26, 1616, MARGERY STEPHENS of Abbotts Kerswell, probably daughter of Edward and Margaret Stephens of Kingswear.  He came to New England accompanied by his son James but without his wife.  In 1653 he was fined L20 at the Ipswich Court for living without her, but next year the fine was remitted as he was aged and poor and "had used his endeavor to have his wife brought over to him."  He was often in trouble with the minister.  He lived at Cape Ann in 1642 and was constable at Gloucester in 1647, Clerk of the Train Band in 1652 and weaver at Boston in 1655.  His home was located where the Post Office now is on Devonshire Street.  He went to New London, Conn. in 1665 were he was buried March 12, 1679.  See the Groton Avery Clan (1912).
    His only child was:
3.  CAPTAIN JAMES AVERY, b. in England, ca. 1620; m. (1) at Boston Nov. 10, 1643, JOANNA GREENSLADE; m. (2) July 4, 1698, Abigail, widow of Samuel Chesebrough and of Joshua Holmes.  He went from Gloucester, where he was an extensive land owner, to Pequot (New London) where he had a grant of land in October 1650 on the West side of the Thames River.  In 1656 he built a home at Poquonock on the East side of the River, where Groton now is.  On its site has been established the Avery Memorial Park.  In 1660 he was an Indian Overseer.  He was Ensign in 1662; Lieutenant of the New London Train Band in 1665; he was the military officer second in command in New London County in 1672 and was appointed Captain of the New London County Dragoons in 1673.  At this time another war with the Dutch was feared and "it was ordered that each dragoone be provided with a good sword and belt, and serviceable muskitt or kirbine, with a shott powch and powder and bullitts, viz: one pownd of powder made into cartridges fitt for his gunn, and and three pownd of bullitts fitt for their gunns, or pistol bullitts, and a horse to expedite theri march"  (Conn. Colonial Records 2:207-8).  He was appointed on NOv. 25, 1675, Fifth in Command of the Army in King Philips War (Conn. Col. Rec. 2:386).  He was one of the Council of Four to dispose of the captives and plunder taken from the Indians in that war.  He was Deputy of the Connecticut Legislature for New London 1659-61, 64-65, 67-69, 75-77, 80, 82-86, 89 (Jacob's' List of Civil and Military Officers in Connecticut before 1677; Groton Avery Clan, p. 68).  He was one of the judges of the County Court 1666 to 1695 except in 1671 and 1673.  He died in New London, April 18, 1700.  His wife was living as late as 1693.

4.    MARIE AVERY, b. at Gloucester, Mass., Feb. 19, 1647/8; m. at New London, Conn., Oct. 23, 1668,     JOSEPH MINER (q.v.); d. at Stonington, Conn., Feb. 2, 1708; buried at Taugwonk.

 
 
BARET

1.    JOHN BARET was in Blythborough, Suffolk, England, in 1483.  His will was filed March 10, 1513 (Suffield Archdeaconry Wills 1513-1518, fol. 32).  His wife JOAN left a will dated Jan. 10 1526, fol. 163).
    For the children of John Baret see English Ancestry of Margaret Baret, by Geo. S. Porter (1906).
    Among them was:
2.    WILLIAM BARET, like his father was a gentleman of Blythborough and later of Westhall, Suffolk, England.  His wife was MARGARET LOVE, sole heiress of Richard Love of Westhall, Suffolk, England.  He died Nov. 8, 1547 and his wife survived him dying after 1565.

    His eldest child was:
3.    WILLIAM BARET,  a gentleman of Westhall, Suffolk, England.  He m. (1) Jane, daughter of William Clayton of Cheson and Hulesworth, Suffolk, England; m. (2) MARGARET (PETTYSHALL) widow of Rev. William Wingfield, Abbot of Castle-Acre.  She was the daughter of Thomas Pettyshall of Norwich, England, (Visitation of Suffolk 1561, p. 4).  William Baret died March 11, 1565.

    Among those by his second wife was:
4.    CHRISTOPHER BARET, bapt. 1562 at Westhall, Suffolk, England.  He m. ELIZABETH CLARKE at Lincolnshire, England; d. Norwich, Norfolk, England, in August 1649, survived by his widow.
    After the third marriage of his mother he went with her and his stepfather to Norwich, England, where in 1574 he was apprenticed for twelve years to a grocer.  In 1586, he became a grocer in Norwich.  He was Sheriff in 1615 and Mayor of Norwich in 1634.  He was Deputy Mayor in 1647.  Of his nine children the last six were baptized at St. Andrews Parish, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  He died aged about 87.

    Among his nine children was:
5.    MARGARET BARET, bapt. at St. Andrews Parish, Norwich, England, Sept. 29, 1595; m. probably at Norwich, England, SIMON HUNTINGTON (q.v.).  In 1637 she sailed on the "Elizabeth Bonaventure" with her husband and children, arriving at Boston June 15, 1637.   Her husband died of small pox just before landing.  She went to Roxbury, Mass., where she married (2) in 1635 or 1636 Lieutenant Charles Stoughton and went with him to Windsor, Conn. in 1635.  She survived his death which occurred on March 25, 1661/2.  The date of her death is not known.
